Strong Girls Club

We are so excited to be bringing a brand new offering to Strong Like a Mutha.

Did you know that research has shown that children as young as three years old are displaying negative feelings toward their bodies and that children as young as 6 have shown an interest in dieting to lose weight? This is abhorrent and something we are super passionate about dismantling. We want to show young women that exercise can be fun, smashing the “diet culture” narrative that it’s only there to atone for what we eat or as a means to lose weight. We want to support young women to access the life-changing benefits of lifting weights and empower them to show up as their incredible, authentic selves. That is exactly why we have created our latest offering…

Strong Girls Club!

Strong Girls Club is a coach lead and peer-support exercise and wellbeing program for girls and young women aged 13-16 by Strong Like a Mutha.

Our vision with Strong Girls Club is to empower a generation of young girls to know that they are worthy exactly as they are and to find body confidence and happiness regardless of their weight, shape or body size.

SGC was created by SLAM founder Lyndsey Roberts who is on a mission to make the fitness industry a more supportive and inclusive space for all humans. Lyndsey grew up in the east end of Glasgow where access to opportunities in sport for young women was seriously lacking. As a result, Lyndsey found herself to be a teenager who loved to dance but hated anything to do with PE at school. “PE felt so far removed from an inclusive environment and I dreaded it so much that I forged a note from my parents that allowed me to skip it every week.” Lyndsey went on to have a career in professional dance and as a result, spent a lot of time in gym environments. “I was so scared of lifting weights because I believed that they would make me “bulky” or damage my career” It wasn’t until after the birth of her first son that Lyndsey learned the life-changing benefits of lifting heavy weights. “I couldn’t believe how empowered I felt, I have always been a small human, forever underestimated and all of a sudden I felt so much stronger but not just physically - mentally too and I knew this was a feeling I wanted to share with other women”. That was 7 years ago, fast forward to now and Lyndsey is the owner of The Mutha Ship - an inclusive and supportive gym for all bodies. “When I was a young woman I knew nothing about gyms, I had serious issues with my hormone cycle, I was battling with undiagnosed ADHD and I had an eating disorder from growing up in an industry that taught me my worth was in how I looked, I discovered weight training in my late 20’s and it changed my life. It empowered me to work with my body, not against it and helped me become body happy and confident in who I am. If I had known that as a young person, I would have had a different journey for sure and that’s exactly why I have created The Strong Girls Club.”

Before creating SLAM Lyndsey worked in outreach with young women all across Scotland, she has been a mentor and guide to thousands of young women looking to create a career in dance or the fitness industry and is well-versed in supporting young women to feel confident, empowered and to never let anyone hold them back because of gender stereotyping and bias. A passionate gender equality and women’s rights activist, Lyndsey is an ideal human to hold this safe and supportive space for young women.
